Magnetic Separation for Aggregate and Quarry Plants

In aggregate and quarry lines, magnetic separation is normally used to remove bucket teeth, drill steel, bolts, wire, and other tramp iron before crushers, screens, or conveyors are damaged. Start with a suspended magnet above the feed conveyor; select it from actual burden depth, belt speed, suspension height, iron size, and discharge requirement.

Quarry Conditions That Change Selection

  • High bulk density increases burden mass and working distance.
  • Large lumps can shield smaller iron and strike the magnet or cleaning belt.
  • Dust, rain, vibration, and outdoor temperature affect drives, bearings, guards, and electrical components.

Manual or Self-Cleaning?

Manual cleaning may fit occasional tramp iron and planned shutdowns. Continuous quarry operation or frequent bucket teeth, wire, and bolts normally requires review of a self-cleaning overband. The cleaning belt needs a safe iron discharge route and maintenance access.

What Magnetic Protection Does Not Replace

A magnet does not replace controlled loading, metal detection where required, crusher protection controls, or inspection. It will not reliably remove aluminum, copper, or iron fully locked inside a large rock. Define the smallest critical target and test it under realistic burden conditions.

Commissioning Checks

Measure the final magnet height and peak burden, verify that captured iron clears the conveyor and guards, and confirm cleaning-belt direction and tracking where applicable. Test representative iron at the top and bottom of the normal burden using an approved safe procedure. Record belt speed, depth, iron size, placement, and result.

Equipment direction A suspended magnet is normally reviewed for large tramp iron above a belt; a head pulley or drum can be considered for continuous removal of smaller liberated ferrous pieces at a controlled discharge point.
